Leaving Rose Hills

Stained glass, solder, lead, glass paint, wood frame, 21 x 25 x 0.75 in

Leaving Rose Hills is in reference to Rose Hills Cemetery in Whittier, claimed to be the largest cemetery in North America. Growing up in Southeast LA, I often passed the Rose Hills sign, which became a familiar landmark of the area. The stars in this piece symbolize those I’ve lost — loved ones who have passed away and, in my imagination, leave Rose Hills transformed into stars, transcending the natural world and entering a beyond.
